How Often Should You Change Your Bed Linen? Tips from Hotel Practice

Fresh bed linen is one of those small things that make a big difference: crisp, smooth and with that clean scent. But how often should you actually change it? There is no single rule, but there are commonly recommended guidelines. In this article we explain the usual rhythm, when it makes sense to change more often and which routines from hotel practice make changing the bed at home easier.

The rule of thumb: every one to two weeks

A change every one to two weeks is commonly recommended for duvet covers, pillowcases and sheets. During the night we lose moisture and skin flakes, and some of it ends up in the bed linen. Regular washing keeps the bed fresh and pleasant.

Many households find a weekly change a good routine; others manage well with every two weeks. What suits you depends on your habits and personal preferences.

When it makes sense to change more often

  • In summer: on warm nights we sweat more. Many people then change their bed linen weekly or even more often.
  • With pets in the bed: hair and dirt from outside quickly end up in the linen.
  • If you go to bed without showering or use a lot of skin care products in the evening.
  • After a cold or similar: many people like to start with fresh linen once they feel better.

Pillowcases: often a little more frequently

Your face, hair and skin care products are in direct contact with the pillowcase every night. Many people therefore change pillowcases more often than the rest of the bed linen, for example once a week or in between. With a few spare pillowcases, this is easy to do.

What about duvets and pillows?

The bed linen protects the duvet and pillows but does not replace their care. How often duvets and pillows can be washed or cleaned depends on the filling – follow the manufacturer's instructions. Airing them regularly is also helpful.

Tips from hotel practice

In hotels, beds are generally made up fresh for every new guest, and housekeeping follows clear routines. Some of these ideas work very well at home:

  • Three sets per bed: one on the bed, one in the wash, one in the cupboard. This way a fresh set is always ready.
  • A fixed day: change the bed linen on the same day every week or every second week. A routine makes it easier to stick to.
  • Uniform colours: the classic hotel bed is white. A set in one colour looks calm and tidy – and pieces are easy to combine.
  • Air first: in the morning, fold back the duvet and open the window for a while before making the bed. This lets moisture escape.
  • Corners first: put the fitted sheet on diagonally, corner by corner, so it sits smoothly.
  • Shake and smooth: shake out duvet and pillows well after putting on the covers – that gives the bed volume.

Washing correctly

How often you change your bed linen is one thing; how you wash it is another. For our sateen bed linen made from Egyptian cotton we recommend washing at 40 °C with similar colours, a mild detergent and no chlorine bleach. You can find all the details in our care guide for sateen bed linen.

Frequently asked questions about changing bed linen

Is it enough to change bed linen once a month?

Every one to two weeks is commonly recommended. Changing only once a month is generally considered too infrequent, especially in summer.

Should I change the fitted sheet as often as the duvet cover?

Yes, ideally you change all parts at the same time. The fitted sheet is in direct contact with your body all night.

How many sets of bed linen do I need per bed?

Two sets are the minimum, three are practical: one on the bed, one in the wash and one ready in the cupboard.

Conclusion

A change every one to two weeks is a good guideline, more often in summer and for pillowcases. With a fixed day and three sets per bed, fresh bed linen becomes an easy routine – just like in a hotel.
