Washing, Drying and Ironing Sateen Bed Linen – The Care Guide

Cotton sateen is known for its smooth feel and subtle sheen. To keep both for a long time, sateen bed linen needs no complicated care – just a few good habits. In this care guide we show you step by step how to wash, dry, iron and store your sateen bed linen properly, and which mistakes are worth avoiding.

Why sateen needs a little attention

Sateen owes its smooth surface to its weave: in the satin weave, threads float over several opposing threads before passing under one. These longer floats create the sheen, but they can be somewhat more sensitive to strong friction than a plain weave. You can read more about this in our article Sateen or percale?. Gentle care helps keep the surface beautiful.

Before first use

Wash new bed linen once before you use it for the first time. This removes residues from production and packaging, and the fabric becomes noticeably softer.

Washing sateen bed linen: step by step

  1. Sort: wash with similar colours. Wash dark shades such as black separately for the first few washes.
  2. Prepare: turn duvet covers and pillowcases inside out and close any fastenings. Do not wash bed linen together with items that have hook-and-loop fasteners or sharp zips.
  3. Load: do not overfill the drum. Bed linen needs room to move so it is cleaned evenly and creases less.
  4. Temperature: we recommend 40 °C for our bed linen. Always follow the care label.
  5. Detergent: use a mild detergent – for coloured linen ideally a colour detergent. Avoid chlorine bleach.
  6. Spin: a moderate spin speed reduces creasing.

Fabric softener: yes or no?

Fabric softener is not necessary for cotton sateen. It can leave a film on the fibres and reduce the ability of cotton to absorb moisture. If you use it, use it sparingly.

Drying sateen bed linen

Ideally, hang your bed linen up to dry with plenty of space, out of strong direct sunlight, especially for coloured linen. Shake each piece out well before hanging it up – this smooths out a lot of creases.

If you use a tumble dryer, choose a low temperature and follow the care label. Take the linen out while it is still slightly damp. Over-drying makes cotton rougher and encourages creases.

Ironing sateen bed linen

Thanks to its smooth surface, sateen creases less than percale, so ironing is often not necessary. If you would like a particularly smooth, hotel-like look:

  • iron while the linen is still slightly damp,
  • use the cotton setting or a medium temperature, depending on the care label,
  • iron from the reverse side to protect the sheen,
  • if you have one, a steam iron or a rotary iron makes large covers easier.

Storing bed linen correctly

Store clean, fully dry bed linen in a cool, dry and dark cupboard. Avoid airtight plastic bags – cotton likes to breathe. A practical tip: store each set folded inside one of its own pillowcases. This keeps everything together and the cupboard tidy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • washing too hot or drying too hot – cotton can contract slightly,
  • overloading the drum,
  • chlorine bleach or aggressive stain removers,
  • washing together with hook-and-loop fasteners, towels with rough loops or jeans with rivets.

Treat stains as soon as possible with cold water, without rubbing hard, and then wash as usual.

Frequently asked questions about caring for sateen bed linen

Can I wash sateen bed linen at 60 °C?

Always follow the care label. For our bed linen we recommend 40 °C, which is gentle on fibres and colours.

Why does sateen lose its sheen?

Common causes are washing too hot, strong friction in an overfilled drum, aggressive detergents or over-drying. Gentle washing and drying help preserve the surface.

Does sateen bed linen need to be ironed?

Usually not. If you shake it out well and hang it up smoothly, it often looks neat without ironing. For a crisp look, iron it slightly damp from the reverse side.

Conclusion

Caring for sateen is simple: wash gently at 40 °C, use a mild detergent, dry carefully and iron only when needed. With these habits, your bed linen keeps its smooth feel and subtle sheen for a long time. Shipping within Germany is free and usually takes 1–3 working days – more on our shipping page.
