Which Bed Linen Size Fits? 135×200, 155×220 or 240×220 – The Complete Size Chart

Anyone buying new bed linen in Germany quickly comes across a whole range of numbers: 135 × 200, 155 × 220, 200 × 220, 240 × 220 cm. Which size is the right one depends less on the bed itself than on your duvet and pillows. In this guide we explain the common German bed linen sizes, show you in a size chart what each size fits, how to measure correctly – and which sizes you will find at Jumel Home.

The most important rule: the cover follows the duvet

A duvet cover is always chosen to match the duvet, not the mattress. A 135 × 200 cm duvet needs a 135 × 200 cm cover, a 240 × 220 cm duvet a 240 × 220 cm cover. The first number usually stands for the width, the second for the length. The same applies to pillowcases: they follow the size of the pillow.

Only the fitted sheet is chosen according to the mattress – its width, length and height. You can read more about this in our guide to fitted sheets and pocket depth.

Fitted sheets and flat sheets

Fitted sheets follow the mattress. Common widths in Germany are 90, 100, 140, 160, 180 and 200 cm at a length of 200 cm. Jumel Home fitted sheets are available from 90 × 200 to 200 × 200 cm and fit mattresses up to 35 cm deep. If you prefer a classic tucked-in look, you will also find flat sheets in our range.

How to measure correctly

  1. Duvet: lay it flat and measure width and length from seam to seam. Many duvets also carry the size on the label.
  2. Pillow: measure the pillow lying flat, without pressing it down.
  3. Mattress: measure width, length and height – including any topper – for the fitted sheet.

A cover should match the duvet size. If it is much too large, the duvet slips inside it; if it is too small, the filling is compressed and the duvet loses volume.

Frequently asked questions about bed linen sizes

Does a 135 × 200 cm cover fit a 155 × 220 cm duvet?

No. The cover would be too narrow and too short, and the duvet would be compressed. Always choose the cover in the exact size of your duvet.

Which duvet cover size do I need for a 180 × 200 cm bed?

That depends on whether you sleep under two single duvets or one shared duvet. For a shared duvet, 240 × 220 cm is a popular choice; if you like more overhang at the sides, 260 × 220 cm is worth considering.

Is 50 × 70 cm a German pillow size?

It is more of an international size, but it is now widely used in Germany too, often as a second, smaller pillow. The classic German sizes are 80 × 80 and 40 × 80 cm.

Conclusion

The right bed linen size starts with your duvet and pillows, not with the bed frame. Measure once, compare with the size chart and you will find the matching cover.
