Hotel Feeling at Home: 7 Tips for the Perfect Bed in Winter

A freshly made hotel bed has something special about it: smooth sheets, a fluffy duvet, carefully arranged pillows. Especially in winter, when evenings are long and nights are cold, many people want that feeling at home too. The good news: you don't need a new bedroom for it. With the right materials, a little layering and good care, you can get surprisingly close to a hotel bed. Here are our seven tips for the perfect bed in winter.

1. Start with the foundation: the fitted sheet

The fitted sheet is the part of the bed you have the most skin contact with – and at the same time the most underrated. A hotel bed looks so neat mainly because the sheet sits tight and wrinkle-free.

So pay attention to two things: the size must match the mattress, and the pocket depth – the height of the side panel – must be enough for the mattress height including any topper. If the pocket is too shallow, the sheet slips off the corners at night. Our fitted sheets in 600 TC sateen come in several sizes.

2. Choose the right warmth level for your duvet

In winter, it is mainly the duvet that decides whether you sleep comfortably warm or freeze or sweat at night. For fibre-filled duvets, warmth is often stated as fill weight per square metre. As a rule: the higher the fill weight, the warmer the duvet.

Our hotel duvet with Poly-Down filling comes in three warmth levels:

  • All Season (250 g/m²): for people who tend to get warm at night or for well-heated bedrooms.
  • Warm (350 g/m²): a balanced choice for the cold season.
  • Extra Warm (450 g/m²): for people who feel the cold easily or for cool bedrooms.

Which level is right depends less on the season than on how warm you personally sleep and on your bedroom. Couples sharing one duvet often choose one level lighter, because two people generate more warmth. You can also choose between "Fluffy" for a puffy look and "Compacted" for a smoother, flatter finish.

3. Layer instead of relying on one thick duvet

In a hotel, there is rarely just one cover on the bed. Often a sheet, the duvet in its cover and a bedspread or throw at the foot of the bed come together. This principle works especially well at home in winter.

The advantage of layers: you can adjust the warmth flexibly at night. If you get warm, push the throw aside instead of kicking off the whole duvet. A smooth sheet between you and the duvet also creates that typical hotel feeling as you slip in.

How to build the bed: fitted sheet, a flat sheet on top if you like, then the duvet in its cover, folded back about a hand's width at the head end. A throw or bedspread goes across the lower third of the bed.

4. Arrange your pillows like a hotel

Pillows give the bed structure and make the difference between "made" and "inviting". A proven arrangement for a double bed: two large 80 × 80 cm pillows at the back, two smaller 40 × 80 cm or 50 × 70 cm pillows in front.

Don't just think about looks, but also about support. Stomach sleepers usually suit a soft pillow, back sleepers a medium one and side sleepers – depending on shoulder width – a medium or firm pillow. Matching pillowcases in white, black, rosa and champagne complete the picture.

5. Choose bed linen with a soft hand feel

Hotel bed linen is often made from cotton in a sateen or percale weave. Percale is matte and feels rather cool and crisp. Sateen, on the other hand, is smooth, soft and has a subtle sheen – many people find it particularly pleasant when getting into bed in winter.

Our bed linen is made from 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton in 600 TC sateen. Long fibres can be spun into fine, even yarns, which contributes to a smooth surface. If you want to upgrade the whole bed at once, our 4-piece bedding sets with duvet cover, fitted sheet and two pillowcases are the easiest way.

6. Air your bed and bedroom regularly

In winter, people often air their rooms less – yet fresh air is important for a pleasant sleeping climate. A hotel bed is turned down and remade every morning. You can easily adopt this:

  • Fold back the duvet in the morning so moisture from the night can escape.
  • Air the bedroom for a few minutes in the morning with the window wide open instead of leaving it permanently tilted.
  • Make the bed only after airing and give the duvet and pillows a quick shake.

Many people find a rather cool bedroom combined with a suitable duvet more pleasant than a heavily heated room.

7. Care for your bed linen properly

To keep sateen feeling soft after many washes, care matters. Wash new bed linen before first use. After that, we recommend washing it at 40 °C with similar colours and a mild detergent, and avoiding chlorine bleach. Always check the care label as well.

Our hotel duvet is machine washable at 30 °C. The "Fluffy" version is then tumble dried on low heat so the fibres spread evenly; the "Compacted" version is air dried.

A tip from the hotel world: keep a second set ready. That way you can change the bed linen while the other set is washed and fully dried – and both sets are used more evenly.

Frequently asked questions about a hotel bed in winter

Which duvet is right for winter?

It depends on how warm you sleep and on the room temperature. If you feel the cold easily, choose a warmer duvet with a higher fill weight; if you get warm quickly at night, a lighter duvet is often better.

Is sateen bed linen suitable for winter?

Yes. Sateen is smooth and soft and feels less cool and crisp than percale when you get into bed. Warmth comes mainly from the duvet.

How often should I change my bed linen?

There is no fixed rule. Many people change their bed linen every one to two weeks. A second set makes changing easier.

How do I get the bed as smooth as in a hotel?

The key is a well-fitting fitted sheet with sufficient pocket depth. Shake the duvet and pillows after airing and smooth the cover.

Conclusion

The perfect winter bed comes from many small decisions: a well-fitting fitted sheet, the right warmth level, thoughtful layers, comfortable pillows, soft bed linen and good care.
